Zhong Kui (钟馗) is the title protagonist of Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Known in Chinese Taoist mythology as the “King of Ghosts” (鬼王) and the “Grand Demon Vanquisher” (赐福镇宅圣君), he commands a legion of 84,000 subdued spirits and travels through the 18 Courts of Hell to eradicate malignant fiends and restore cosmic balance.
Armed with the Seven-Star Demon-Slaying Sword, spiritual Cinnabar talismans, and the soul-devouring Nether Gourd, Zhong Kui represents righteousness, spiritual vengeance, and divine judgment against corrupt underworld magistrates.
👑 The Grand Demon Vanquisher (赐福镇宅圣君)
Mythological Origins: The Injustice at Chang’an
According to Tang and Song Dynasty classical records, Zhong Kui was an exceptionally gifted scholar from Zhongnan Mountain who traveled to Chang’an for the Imperial Examinations. Despite scoring highest in the empire, Emperor Dezong stripped him of his honors due to his severe, unpolished facial features.
Defiant against the corrupt imperial court, Zhong Kui threw himself against the palace steps. Moved by his incorruptible righteousness, the Jade Emperor canonized him as the Grand Demon Vanquisher, giving him heavenly authority to judge, hunt, and devour all evil spirits.
